LOST FROGS IN THE LAND OF THE LIVING DEAD, HAITI

A sadness echoes through the brown hillsides of Haiti, ricocheting off craggy limestone outcrops once cloaked in verdant forest. Where the delicate whistle of the La Selle Grass Frog once rose from moist leaf litter under a canopy of tree ferns, wind now whips dust into spiraling clouds and scatters it into the air around me. As I scour the grassy slopes of the Massif de la Selle, the site where the La Selle Grass Frog was last seen a quarter of a century ago, the frog starts to feel like a poignant symbol of a Haiti past.

Haiti, a land where the line between myth and reality is blurred and the walking dead are accepted as a part of life, has fascinated me since I stepped foot on its parched soil in early 2007. The country does not want for stories of loss; the name is synonymous with misfortune and suffering. But what about stories of hope? To uncover hope in Haiti, one must dig a little deeper, past layers of sadness to a place where dew drips from splendid orchids and a gentle mist rolls through forest, carrying a story on a symphony of calls for whoever will listen. There are few more compelling backdrops against which to search for lost frogs than in the hidden forest fragments that cling to rugged limestone mountains in this misunderstood country.
